Kentucky Waterways Alliance is taking a stand against tire pollution in waterways across the commonwealth. Tires in waterways are indicators of larger issues including environmental health, public health, pollution, illegal dumping, and neglected waterways. In some cases, tires in waterways have accumulated over decades, been discarded due to lack of affordable recycling options or misguidedly used as a method for bank stabilization. Through the Green River Tire and Access Identification Project, KWA and our partners are developing new tools and research to better understand this systemic and harmful pollution. Our tools aim to provide opportunities for community action and research that supports prevention, future tire removal efforts and mitigation opportunities. Tools include:
