River Cowboys is a powerful 12 minute film that inspires, educates, and reminds us that we have the power to change the world for the better. Made by Kentucky Waterways Alliance in partnership with Friends of Red River and Wilkinson Visual this film highlights the heroic effort of a committed group of "River Cowboys" to keep Kentucky’s Red River free of illegally dumped tires and trash. It showcases the stunning landscapes of the internationally recognized Red River Gorge and the Red River, Kentucky's only nationally designated 'Wild & Scenic" river. The film addresses an ongoing environmental challenge: the removal of thousands of discarded tires and other trash from Red River while looking at solutions to this statewide and national issue. It is suitable for all audiences

The impact of this film includes:
--The development of an environmental education curriculum to accompany the film that teachers to use in the classroom as a teaching tool and to inspire their environmental stewardship in their students.
--The 2025 Senate Resolution 238, a bipartisan resolution passed by the Kentucky Legislature acknowledging the scale of the tire pollution – thanks in large part to advocacy by KWA and its partners
--In 2025 - GIS initiative to enhance recreational access and identify waste tire pollution in the Green River, resulting in a tire reporting tool the public can use to report waste tires in waterways to aid in tire removal efforts. The goal of this pilot project is to expand the program across the Commonwealth.
