Eastern Kentucky is blessed with abundant streams and a beautiful natural environment, and this is especially true of the Red Bird River watershed running through Clay and Leslie counties. Keeping waterways clean and watersheds healthy contributes not only to the quality of life of people who live and work in the area, but also attracts business, tourism and economic development. With this in mind, Kentucky Waterways Alliance and the U.S. Forest Service have partnered together with other interested local groups to work on an ecological restoration project.  Over the course of the next year, this group will be calling on the communities of Clay and Leslie counties to answer important questions like:

"What impacts the quality of the water?" "What impacts the natural resources?" and "How can we sustain natural resources and enhance economic benefits?"

Please make plans to attend the first Red Bird Community Open House and meeting on October 25 at Big Creek Elementary School. The open house session starting at 5:00 p.m. will be an opportunity to get to know folks involved in the project and the business meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Everyone is welcome to attend one or both portions. Our project cannot be successful without community support so please spread the word to everyone you know who loves the Red Bird River.
