Communication Director
This position is full-time with benefits, including paid vacation, holidays, sick leave and retirement matching funds. Salary is competitive for environmental non-profits in Kentucky and commensurate with experience. Expected salary range is $37,000 - $40,000.
Kentucky Waterways Alliance (KWA) is a non-profit organization devoted to the protection and restoration of Kentucky's waterways and their watersheds. The Communications Director will work with all of the staff and play a significant role in publicizing our work and raising the profile of the organization. The successful candidate will need excellent communication skills and be proficient with various software tools and have the ability and interest to learn more.
This is a senior level position. It requires:
1. Strong committment to river conservation and watershed protection.
2. Prior experience in nonprofit organizations, particularly those dealing with environmental or water issues.
3. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation. Willingness and availability to travel, with occasional weekend travel.
4. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
5. Excellent interpersonal skills, including willingness and ability to work effectively as part of a team as well as ability to self-motivate and work independently.
6. Computer and basic IT skills and knowledge, including:
- Ability to perform website updates and maintenance (Drupal platform experience preferred) (est. 20% of time)
- Publication layout and design (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator - or other similar graphic design software experience) to assist in program work, newsletter design and layout, event promotion and more (est. 20% of time)
- Vertical Response - or similar experience for e-alerts and e-newsletter (est. 10% of time)
- Interest and ability to maintain and suggest improvements to membership database (Salesforce experience for nonprofits preferred) (est. 30% of time)
- Vocus experience for press releases and media outreach, and Google marketing grant for nonprofit experience and Google alerts for media hits desired (est. <10% of time)
- Ability to organize/analyze/report on and communicate results for all of the above for use in grants, board reports, and planning (est. <10% of time)
7. Well established ability to manage time and resources efficiently.
8. College degree preferred.

KWA staff receives reimbursement for the use of their personal vehicles for KWA authorized travel at the quarterly publicized rate established by the KY Finance Cabinet. KWA is not able to provide health insurance for its employees.
