News Flash! Beargrass Creek Alliance unveils its new logo created by Sullivan School of Design student Nick Morris! The design incorporates both natural and urban elements and the black-crowned night heron from previous Beargrass work. Thanks Nick and Sullivan for all your hard work!
The Beargrass Creek Alliance is a community group that believes our beautiful creek is worth fighting for! Our mission is to raise awareness ab
out issues facing the creek, improve its water quality, and eventually create more access to the creek.
We carry out clean-ups, have occasional meetings and social events, and encourage everyone to do their part. Our mission is to give the creek back to its rightful owners - the community.

The Stormwater/Beargrass Connection
When we say ‘stormwater,’ we just mean rain or snow. Stormwater pollution is particularly bad news for Beargrass Creek because so much nearby land has been paved over. So it’s not only the pollutants that the stormwater picks up that are problematic, but it’s also the water itself. Too much water at once overflows the system. Because in parts of town we have combined sewer and storm drains, a big rain storm will overflow the system and cause sewage to be released into the creek. One way to address this issue is by capturing the rain that falls before it runs off so it won’t overflow the system. Rain gardens, rain barrels and cisterns, and native plants can all help.
We can all do something to help! There are many ways to combat pollution caused by stormwater runoff in our communities. Watch the video below to see the issue through the eyes of local 9-year-olds from the Bloom Elementary Media Club and 1st place winners of our Show Your Love for Beargrass Creek video short contest. What Can You Do?
Examples of some of the small steps you can take for a healthier Beargrass Creek:
-
Building rain gardens
-
Using rain barrels and cisterns
-
Plant native plants in your yard
-
Promoting pervious pavement in new development
-
Participating in creek clean-ups
-
Storm drain stenciling
-
Creek Celebration days when we all come together to celebrate the wonderful things about Beargrass!
The possibilities are endless if we put our minds together to support the creek. Making small changes in our own backyards will ultimately give the creek back to its rightful owners – the community.
