Show Your Love for Beargrass Creek
Like many urban streams, Beargrass Creek has fallen victim to pollution over the years making it unsafe for recreation. Our new initiative for the creek will be built upon the work of those before us, including the Beargrass Creek Watershed Council. It’s a big job, and there is room for everyone to be involved.
Our work to reclaim the creek will begin in our own backyard. If you’re a local resident in the Butchertown and Irish Hill neighborhoods, we want your help! We hope to engage local residents and businesses to work toward improving water quality in the creek and making it an accessible part of our city again.
Examples of ways we can all work together for better creek water quality include building rain gardens and producing rain barrels, promoting pervious pavement in new development, creek clean-ups, storm drain stenciling, and creek celebration days. The possibilities are endless if we put our minds together to support the creek! Our efforts will bring about change at the local level and will give the creek back to its rightful owners – the community.
Beargrass Brainstorming Meeting
Kentucky Waterways Alliance hosted the first community meeting on January 26 at Eyedia Store in Louisville. More than 20 people braved the cold to share their ideas about how we can all work together toward a better Beargrass Creek.
During the meeting, we talked about our concerns for Beargrass and the issues we've experienced firsthand. But, we didn't stop there! We also talked about solutions - how we can all do our part to protect the creek. Click here to read more.
We also discovered that there is a great need to have one portal available that includes information about ways to act on behalf of the creek. To solve this problem, we have created a calendar where we can post cleanups, events, or other community efforts to celebrate or restore the Beargrass. Please e-mail us with events you know of that should be included on this calendar.
Keep on brainstorming, and we'll clean up Beargrass together!
